Biography

       Brailliterate    (1993)

series of Braille books with false covers.

This installation consists of a series of books presented in a reading room. The books' covers read, " New World Translation of The Holy Scriptures." Upon turning the pages of one of these books, the viewer discovers that the text is printed in Braille. The content and meaning of the book is therefore unknown to those who do not read Braille. Likewise, if a blind Braille reader engages the book, they will not have access to the information on the books' covers. This disjuncture is significant because the text bears no relation to the Holy Scriptures - its face and body belong to two different worlds. Because the artist appended the cover to a set of found Braille books, he himself does not understand their contents. The only audience that will comprehend the deceptive rupture between the title and contents of the Brailliterate series is a person in full capacity of their vision and educated in Braille - one who has learned the language of the blind.
