Biography

       Panda Zoo    (1998)

Performance/mixed media installation: bamboo, New Hampshire pigs in masks, classical Chinese Paintings.

This performance demands that the viewer confront New Hampshire pigs (black and white) for what they are and what they resemble - panda bears. By doctoring their appearance with white masks and placing them inside a typically 'orientalized' atmosphere, with Chinese painting on the wall and bamboo shooting from the ground, the pigs resemble panda's more than ever. In addition to treating the animal with cultural markings, as in many of the artist's experimental work with animals, this work questions the way our own vision is altered by visual culture between civilizations.
