       The Opening    (1998)

 

mixed media installation / live silkworms, mulberry branch

The Opening is an arrangement of mulberry branches in a vase treated with live silkworms. The silkworms are placed on the branches to eat the leaves. At the start of The Opening the leaves were full, after the silkworms had eaten, there were only the branches left. This piece intends to reflect the artist's conception of Contemporary Art in today's world. Also, the Artist was experimenting with Asian inspired Installation and the cultural connotations that silk carry from the "orient" into the West.
