Interview in English 英语访谈

I have asked same questions to each selected artist from five different countries outside China. My intention is to know their different feelings and impressions of studying and living in China Academy of Art, and their future plan.

Yu Gan:  Please tell me about yourself briefly.

Kirstin Burckhardt: Currently residing in dormitory room 511 on the campus of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China for my 6 month exchange semester. Working in the sculpture department down the hallway, although I would not be considered a single-media artist and usually find myself in installation pieces. Upon my return to Germany, I will finish my graduate-level studies of Fine Arts at the University of Art in Hamburg (Hochschule für bildende Künste).

Yu Gan:  What is your main purpose of study at CAA?

Kirstin Burckhardt: Inhaling and exhaling as much as I can in this brief time. That means: meandering through the sculpture-lined hallways of the school, speaking to Chinese and international students about doing art here as well as living in China and keeping my eyes open. I am especially interested in the theory of independent and interdependent cultures and how artist here integrate the tradition of understanding the ties between individuals in a society and the seemingly opposed ideal of an artist as being independent of exactly these.

Yu Gan:  Could you please describe the topic or idea of the work that you are currently doing?

Kirstin Burckhardt: Where are you when you are traveling? When moving, what is your point of reference? In which way is what you see representative of you? And why exactly do strangers take pictures of me doing taiji in the morning?

Yu Gan:  I am curious about your future plan. Could you tell me a little bit about it?

Kirstin Burckhardt: Finish my studies and then see which place to go to next!
